Surgery of the Larynx and Throat

  1. Keep your head elevated as much as possible for a few days.   This helps prevent swelling and bleeding.

  2. Diet: as tolerated.  Drink extra fluids; avoid hot temperature or spicy foods.

  3. Take medications as directed.  Avoid aspirin, as this can lead to increased bleeding.

  4. Do not gargle unless instructed to do so by your physician.  Avoid coughing, hacking, or forcibly clearing your throat.

  5. Rest your voice for one week.  Avoid talking when possible, and do not yell or whisper.

  6. Avoid lifting greater than 20 pounds for one week.  No strenuous activity for two weeks after surgery.

  7. Notify St. Joseph’s Ear, Nose, and Throat Clinic of the following:

    • Fever over 101°
    • Persistent cough
    • Difficulty breathing or swallowing

  8. If there are any questions or concerns, please contact St. Joseph’s Ear, Nose & Throat Clinic at (208) 777-1320.
