Surgery of the Larynx and Throat
- Keep your head elevated as much as possible for a few days. This helps prevent swelling and bleeding.
- Diet: as tolerated. Drink extra fluids; avoid hot temperature or spicy foods.
- Take medications as directed. Avoid aspirin, as this can lead to increased bleeding.
- Do not gargle unless instructed to do so by your physician. Avoid coughing, hacking, or forcibly clearing your throat.
- Rest your voice for one week. Avoid talking when possible, and do not yell or whisper.
- Avoid lifting greater than 20 pounds for one week. No strenuous activity for two weeks after surgery.
- Notify St. Josephs Ear, Nose, and Throat Clinic of the following:
- Fever over 101°
- Persistent cough
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
