Nasal Endoscopic Sinus Surgery

  1. Keep your head elevated as much as possible for a few days. This helps prevent swelling and bleeding inside your nose and sinuses.

  2. Do not blow your nose for 48 hours.  If you have to sneeze, do so with your mouth open.  There may be some bleeding, but it should not be excessive.

  3. Diet: as tolerated.  Drink extra fluids.  Avoid foods which are hot in temperature or spicy.

  4. Take medications as directed.  Avoid aspirin, as this can lead to increased bleeding.

  5. Surgery center will give you instructions when and how to begin irrigating your nose.

  6. Avoid lifting greater than 20 pounds for one week.  No strenuous activity for two weeks after surgery.

  7. Take only warm baths or showers for one week.  Hot water can increase the risk of bleeding.

  8. Notify St. Joseph’s Ear, Nose, and Throat Clinic of the following:

    • Excessive bleeding
    • Fever over 101°
    • Increasing swelling, pain, or bad odor
    • Change in vision

  9. If there are any questions or concerns, please contact St. Joseph’s Ear, Nose & Throat Clinic at (208) 777-1320.
