Surgery of the Ear

Following surgery you will have a dressing that covers the ear and surrounding area.  This dressing will be removed the following day.

  1. Keep your head elevated as much as possible for a few days.  This helps prevent swelling and bleeding.

  2. Diet: as tolerated.  Drink extra fluids; avoid hot temperature or spicy foods.

  3. Take medications as directed.  Avoid aspirin, as this can lead to increased bleeding.

  4. Do not blow your nose or sneeze with your nose plugged.  This will place excessive pressure on the eardrum.

  5. Wounds which are sutured should be kept clean and dry for 72 hours, and then they can be washed gently with soap and water.

  6. Wounds can be kept uncovered unless they are exposed to chemicals or dirt.  Keep the incision behind the ear covered with the antibiotic ointment.  If a scab builds up on the incision, clean the incision with hydrogen peroxide.

  7. You may begin using ear drops approximately three weeks after surgery, or earlier if greenish drainage develops.  Please use the antibiotic ear drops as given or prescribed (3-4 drops in the ear which surgery was performed, 3 times a day for 3 days.)  Store the ear drops in a cool, dark place until it expires, as it may be used to treat future infections in the unlikely event they occur.

  8. Avoid lifting greater than 20 pounds for one week.  No strenuous activity for two weeks after surgery.

  9. Notify St. Joseph’s Ear, Nose, and Throat Clinic of the following:

    • Fever over 101°
    • Increasing swelling, pain, redness or warmth around the incision
    • Pus draining from the ear or behind the ear
    • Severe dizziness

  10. If there are any questions or concerns, please contact St. Joseph’s Ear, Nose & Throat Clinic at (208) 777-1320.
